Topic: WHY DO WE WITNESS ANOTHER YEAR?
Text: Luke 13:1-9.
6: Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.
7: Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’
8:“The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer.
9: If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’” NLT.
Living to witness another year is a privilege (God’s favour). None of us has right to life. Our passage here is the conclusion of Jesus about those of us living.
In verse 1 of our passage Jesus was informed about how Pilate used some people for rituals, Jesus quickly brought to the awareness of those who gave him the news that they are not better those who Pilate used for rituals and 18 people who died in the tower that collapsed in Siloam. That is the conversation that led to the parable we are studying here.
Any time Jesus wants to buttress a point he did use a parable.
Let’s me begin from verse 6: Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. God is the planter, the giver of life to the tree, no plant exist without a planter, farmer, the planter gave life to the tree.
A planter is a farmer, he could have used the space for something else, either to plant another tree, or poultry, or fishery, but he chose to plant that particular type of tree. He planted a fig tree, he could have decided to use it for any other plant like, mango, yam, cassava etc, but by privilege he chose a fig tree.
What was Jesus insinuating? God gave you and I opportunity, privilege, grace to live, we are not better than those who died in precious years, our living is not by right but by grace.
After the planter planted the tree, he came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. God allowed us to live, he comes watching out for fruits, fruits of righteousness, a life without sin, a life of Holiness, but he was always disappointed.
The privilege given is to see if you will amend your ways and please him, an opportunity to repent and live godly.
Many people have lived many years and all that God keep seeing is disappointment.
I see God saying let me permit them to live for another year, I will watch out for fruit of righteousness and godliness I wish they will not disappoint me this year.
Jesus statement to those with him was harsh, look at it in verse 5 No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too. NLT. Jesus didn’t modify it in a way that will not be offensive, he sounded tough, he was blunt at telling them the truth. Why did he sound like that? Obviously, because that’s how God will sound, that’s how God wants him to deliver the message; you will perish too.
Does that mean God is wicked? It is simply to warn them of the gravity of punishment that awaits sinners, so, the right word Jesus could use is perish. Obviously, God doesn’t want anyone to perish that’s the reason he is warning us.
He gives you another year to amend your ways, repent of your sins, accept Jesus as Lord and savior, abstain from sin. God has always been disappointed; tell him this day that you will not disappoint him anymore. God bless you.
PRAYER.
* Lord, I receive grace to live right, I will not disappoint you anymore.
* I receive grace to please you in all my ways in Jesus name.
